The default mail program is the software that is registered with your operating system as the software that is to handle mailto URL's. When another application wants to send an email, it looks up the default and passes the email to the default mail program.

Set Default Gmail Email Program Windows 7

Setting programs as Default for opening files make it very easy to open files without going through the process of specifying which program to use. However, it can be a bit tricky to set up a default Email Client and it gets worse with Windows 8, as it will set its built-in Mail app as Default Email client.

Before you can actually set Gmail as your default email client, you need to allow Gmail to ask you permission. To do so, open a window of your Chrome browser and click the three-dots icon next to the URL address bar. Then click "Settings," second from the bottom.

In the righthand column of the applications list, click on the "mailto" row and select "Use Gmail." This will set Gmail as your default email client for all mailto links that come from Firefox. No need to save your settings -- Firefox does this automatically.

Note: You also might see the option to "Use Chrome" if you also have the Chrome browser downloaded on your computer. If you see both Chrome and Gmail as default options, stick with Gmail. If not, verify that you're signed into Gmail and load these settings again. If all you see is the option to use Chrome, select this as your default email client.

Hi leo,I have followed the above instructions wrt installing Gmail as the default email handler but the system still insists on using Thunderbird. I have restarted the system several times but there is no change. Any suggestions ??Thanks

Hi Leo,Similar to the question from John MacKenzie query on October 21, 2006 06:05 PM I have followed the above instructions on installing Gmail Notifier to make Gmail the default email handler but the system still insists on using Hotmail. I have restarted the system several times but there is no change. I have Windows XP. Any suggestions?ThanksAndy

Leo: thank you so much. I did the intenet tools and program options like you said, and found my email program there (Incredimail) and that fixed the problem Still wondering why this all happened to begin with. Anyway, I am glad you that you are taking the time to help out.Kim

I use Mozilla and Yahoo email. I am trying to get my mail to default to Yahoo. I have uninstalled/installed messenger several times and still do not get the option for Yahoo Mail as default. Please advise. Thanks

Leo, Leo, Leo! I need help. I downloaded the browser tools with my yahoo messenger, but still do not show an option of yahoo mail being brought up as my default should I wish to click on a link on a website. Windows Live wants me to share my email addy password. HAHAHAHA. That is not an option I wish to choose. I simply want to click on a website mailto link and have my yahoo email pop up. This was so simple to fix in my XP many years ago. Why is it not working in WIN7 and IE9?

After much messing around with Gmail Notifier and Google Talk, neither of which made Gmail the default over Outlook, and turning off Outlook as my default email I was mighty frustrated.EVENTUALLY the cure for FIREFOX (v12) was to go into Tools then Options then applications, scroll down to Mailto: and change it to Gmail. Phew!

Any time you click on an email-address-turned-link (also called a mailto: link) on any web page or in any desktop program on your computer, it opens a compose window in the default mail client that came with your operating system. That's quite annoying when you use a third-party email client or even a webmail service.

Wouldn't you prefer having mailto: links open up in the email program that you use instead? Well, that's exactly how things will work if you set up your email program to be the default handler for mailto: links. We'll show you how to do that.

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to Applications, and under Content Type look for the mailto option. The dropdown menu next to it is where you can specify which email program you want to use. It could be Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, or any other desktop email program such as Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook.

There's nothing you need to configure if you have decided to stick with the mail client that came bundled with your operating system. But if you use a third-party email client like Thunderbird, you can set that as the system-wide default for everything to do with email. Here's how you can do that on the top three desktop operating systems.

Open the Settings app (press Windows key + I) and head to Apps > Default apps. Under Set a default for a file type or link type, search for "mailto," which will bring up the Mail protocol. Click it, then select the desired program from the list.

On macOS, open the Mail app and under Preferences > General, pick the email program that you want to set as the default using the Default email reader popup. Yes, you have to start with Mail, even if you want to configure a different email application as the default.

On Linux, you'll need to ensure that your email program is set as the default application for handling email. The location of the default applications setting might vary based on the distro that you use.

Per default, mailto: links on Android will open in Gmail. To change your default email app, open Settings, head to Apps & notifications > Default apps, select Mail app, and choose a different email app. You can also clear defaults from the respective app.

By default, Firefox will use your system's default mail client to send email for the actions listed above. For Thunderbird, see the Make Thunderbird the Default Mail Client article for steps you can take to make it the default mail program. Check the online or in-product documentation for other mail programs.

Based on information from Default mail client (mozillaZine KB), How to change the default web browser or email application (Apple.com Support), The KDE Control Center (KDE.org), Select Preferred Applications in Ubuntu (DebianAdmin.com) and How to Set Your Default Email App in Windows 11 (howtogeek.com).

According to a Morning Consult survey, 44% of Americans use Gmail the most frequently compared to other email providers. Most of the people in your network are probably Gmail users and know your Gmail address rather than Yahoo or Outlook. Therefore, it can be difficult to manage a separate email address from your default Gmail account just for mailto links.

More than 2 billion people use Google Workspace, formerly known as G Suite, which is a collection of cloud computing, productivity and collaboration tools for businesses. If your company uses Google Workspace, you should make Gmail your default email client on all your work devices. It can be time consuming for you to copy and paste mailto links every time.

Making Gmail your default email client on a Mac is pretty simple. You just need to start the mail application, change the default browser, then navigate to your selected browser to finish the setup. To better understand the process, read the instructions below.

This section will explain the final steps of making Gmail your default email option on Windows and Mac by finalizing the selection in your browser. We will show you how to do this with Chrome, Safari and Firefox.

To use Gmail in both the browser and Windows, you must make it your default email client in Google Chrome. You just need to do a little menu-scrolling and permission-granting. The steps below will show you how to reach the correct menus and select the required options.

You can quickly set Gmail as your default email client on all of your devices with the help of the above step-by-step instructions. We did our best to make the steps as simple as possible for you. Firefox and Windows 10 have relatively simple setup steps, but Safari and Google Chrome could be a little more tricky.

I think there is confusion with Handlers option, having set Chrome as your default Email in default programmes, just check that the handlers is on (there is no other options apart from on/off ) the illustration seems to imply you should see an email set up. This is actually a separate screen not part of the handlers option. Now that you have done the first two steps open Gmail as normal and you will see the diamond shape, when you click on the diamond shape you can then choose gmail as your default email. I tried it earlier today as I was having problems with Outlook and after following the steps it worked for me.

Thank you!! Finally! Specific and easily understood directions to default email to Gmail on Windows 10! I have tried this so many times and YOUR directions worked seamlessly! Saving for other family and friends to follow. Thank you!!

Just a note: When installing Microsoft Outlook for the Mac (careful: it may be bundled in Office) the default handler in your browser may automatically get set to outlook. Ensure you go back and change it to gmail again.

When you click on an email address on a web page or other location you may be prompted to allow the application to open Microsoft Outlook or some other email client. This is related to Outlook being your current default mail application in Windows. If you click on an email address in a browser or other application Windows will try to open Outlook to process sending a message to that address.

Not to fear! With just a few simple steps you can configure Gmail to be your default mail client and have Process Street emails open Gmail compose, pre-populated with the template right in your browser!

I have an email account on gmail which is [email protected] it is now blocked because I have forgotten my password and I need that email account as most people have and it was the way I communicate with. 2ff7e9595c
